Senior Activity Center News, July 2021
The Bandon Senior Activity Center is re-organizing after the Covid shutdown and trying to round up old members — and some new ones. Anyone with ideas for activities, classes or programs is invited to get involved.
Hosts and hostesses are needed several hours each day to keep the doors open, respond to phone messages, and provide information to visitors.
Activities
Card players and board-game enthusiasts meet Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m.
Duplicate bridge is played Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Open bridge is on the schedule Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. Two pinochle players are looking to start regular games.
Bridge Lessons– The free series starts Thursday, August 5, at 11 a.m. Learn the game or refresh your skills with longtime player Louise Nix.
Cribbage fans are playing just for fun through August, with 36 weeks of tournament play set to begin in September. The door opens at 5 p.m. every Tuesday, and games start at 5:30, running until 9 or 10 p.m. Call Doc or Sandy Nyhart at 503-508-0338 or 541-285-5399 to sign up.
Chair Yoga is at 10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 11 a.m. Fridays. Certified instructor Yaz Kane offers this one-hour, by-donation class for anyone needing to regain flexibility and strengthen joints and muscles. Bring your own mat, if possible. Take Off Pounds Sensibly (T.O.P.S.) meets from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Fridays.
Join the BSAC
Election of officers is long overdue, and anyone with an interest in serving on the board should call the BSAC at 541-347-4131. A general meeting will be called in the near future. Dues are just $5 a year, or a lifetime membership for $25.
With the pandemic abating, no official restrictions are in place at the center. Participants are asked to be mindful of other people’s health concerns, especially as COVID numbers are starting to rise again. Social distancing is suggested, and masks are available at the center.
The BSAC is located behind the bright red door at the southern end of the Bandon Community Center, 1200 11th St. SW.
Next door, the Senior Meals program, for people 60 and up, is again serving in-person lunches at 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. A $3 donation is requested. Information about Meals on Wheels is available at 541-269-2013. Drivers and kitchen help are also needed for the program.
